What Is a Paired Sample T-Test?

The Paired Sample T-Test is a parametric test used to compare the mean scores of two related data sets — that is, data collected from the same participants at two different times or under two different conditions.


Assumptions of the Paired Sample T-Test

  1. The two sets of data come from the same group (dependent samples).

  2. The differences between the paired values are normally distributed.

  3. The dependent variable is measured on an interval or ratio scale.


Example:

Research Topic: “The Effect of Training on Employees’ Communication Skills”

  • Independent Variable: Measurement condition (Before training / After training)

  • Dependent Variable: Communication skill score (0–100 scale)

If the difference scores between “before” and “after” are normally distributed, the Paired Sample T-Test can be used to determine whether training significantly improved communication skills.

 

What Is the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test?

The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test is a non-parametric alternative to the Paired Sample T-Test.It is used when the data are not normally distributed or contain outliers, making the mean unreliable as a measure of central tendency.

Instead of comparing mean values, this test uses the ranks of the differences between pairs to determine whether there is a statistically significant change.


Example:

Research Topic: “Changes in Employees’ Stress Levels Before and After a Relaxation Program”

  • Independent Variable: Condition (Before program / After program)

  • Dependent Variable: Stress level (1–5 Likert scale)

If the difference scores are not normally distributed or there are outliers, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test is more appropriate than the Paired Sample T-Test.


How to Choose Between Paired Sample T-Test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test

The choice depends mainly on the distribution and measurement level of your data.

  • If your data are normally distributed and quantitative, use the Paired Sample T-Test.

  • If your data are non-normal or contain outliers, use the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.

  • If your dependent variable is ordinal (e.g., ranked or rating data), use the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.

  • If your dependent variable is interval or ratio (e.g., scores, time, income), use the Paired Sample T-Test.


In summary:

Use Paired Sample T-Test when comparing before–after means from the same sample with normally distributed data.Use Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test when comparing before–after data that are non-normal or ordinal in nature.
